Volunteer Letter regarding Donations to Liga

Jim and Pat,

Thank-you Pat and Jim for allowing my daughter and I to participate in the Liga trip. I went to San Blas this past weekend and it was a very rewarding and enlightening experience. I want to make a donation.  Can I make one to a specific department or does it go to Liga general fund?
I would also like to attend the fundraisers, so please let me know when they are. Thank-you for keeping in touch.

Barbara Abel, May 07, 2003

Dear Barbara,

It is you and the other volunteers that deserves the thanks. Please let us thank you so much for donating your skills and time to help others. Thank you as well for your offer of a donation. I appreciate your allowing me to share my answer with our other volunteers. It is only because of the generosity of people like you that we are able to carry on our 77-year tradition of helping others less fortunate.

Just this last weekend you and the other volunteers made blind people see, crippled children walk, deaf children hear, repaired the faces of disfigured children, fixed hernias, removed tumors, and performed numerous other operations while seeing over 800 patients with every problem imaginable at three different clinics. I am always humbled by the differences you and the other volunteers make in the lives of others at each brief weekend clinic. The outpouring of love and compassion you volunteers show is unsurpassed.

As you recognized on your very first visit all this costs money. While most nonprofit organizations are proud to operate on a budget of 15% or less, Liga struggles along on just 1%, most of which comes from our generous volunteers.

Last year we provided over $7,500,000 (yes that is seven and a half million dollars) in services, medications, and supplies to the people of El Fuerte, San Blas and El Carrizo. We did this with just $75,000. Unfortunately we have no endowment or other sustained source of funding. Each year we scramble for funds to keep going.

Below are some of the areas where funding is desperately needed:

Pay for the office build out (funds taken from operating fund) $11,392
Hearing aids for a year (225) $11,250
Clinic Expenses for a year $6,450
Hangar/office rent for a year $6,360
Medicines for a year $5,240
Transportation & storage of supplies  $4,600
A heart operation for a child  $4,000
Newsletter  $3,700
Insurance for a year $2,230
Reading glasses for a year (2160 pair)  $1,080
Forklift for the warehouse $950
Phone and lights for a year  $840

So, to answer your question, yes any and all donations from you and ALL our volunteers are VERY much appreciated. It is the only thing that keeps us going. Whether you would like to cover the cost of a specific item listed above, cover the cost of some other need you identified or donate to the general fund, I can assure you your money will be put to good use and will help us to continue to serve those less fortunate.

Sincerely, Jim
